KVRTA to Offer Food for Fare Drive December 19 & 20
Charleston, WV: The Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority (KVRTA) working in conjunction with the United Food Operation (UFO) will offer free rides on its system in exchange for a donation of a non perishable food item on Friday, December 19 and Saturday, December 20, 2006. “This is a great way for the Authority to help give back to those in our community” said Denny Dawson, KVRTA General Manager. A person can donate a can of food on the bus in exchange for that trips fare. When buses arrive at the Transit Mall, “food for fare” donations will be collected and placed on another bus. “Our goal is to completely fill a bus with donations, the food will then be distributed to various UFO Food Pantries in the Kanawha Valley for distribution over the December holiday period” added Dawson. Mountaineer Packaging donated the boxes to KVRTA for the food drive. Those passengers who do not have a non perishable food item to donate may still pay their fare with cash.
KVRTA provides public transportation service throughout Kanawha County and over 2.4 million trips were taken on the system last fiscal year. The United Food Operation is a non-profit organization that has been in operation for 26 years and last year provided assistance to 32,000 individuals through 13 food pantries.
